IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Eugene "Gene"
J. Pinto
October 10, 1943 – June 14, 2022
Eugene (Gene) J. Pinto passed away on June 14, 2022, surrounded by his children and brother and sisters. In 2017, Gene lost his loving wife of 45 years, Ramona (nee Wisniewski), missing her every day for almost five years. He is survived by his two children, Gregory (Dawn) and Amy (Joseph Kingsmill, Jr), grandsons, Nicholas and Derek, sister Juliann, brother Vincent, sister Elizabeth Ritchey, sister Theresa (Edward), brother-in-law Richard Wisniewski, Sr (Ellen), 8 nieces and nephews and 11 grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
The eldest of five children, Gene lost his parents, Vincent and Julia (nee Pardus), as a young man and, affected by their loss, he and siblings have since remained close. Family was always important to Gene and shortly after their marriage, Gene and Ramona started their own. In 2009, Gene was promoted to grandfather with the birth of his first grandson, followed by a second grandson, a few years later. Just as his wife loved being a Babcia (grandmother), Gene loved being a PopPop. He shared his love of trains, fishing, reading, and Scouts with his grandsons.
A graduate of West Catholic High School for Boys, Gene enlisted in the United States Coast Guard shortly after high school. After his discharge, Gene entered the computer data processing industry where he worked for over 45 years, including 38 with the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). A lifelong Phillies fan, it seemed appropriate that Gene celebrated his retirement on the same day the Philadelphia Phillies celebrated winning the 2008 World Series.
Gene enjoyed bringing his children to Phillies games at the Vet and at Citizens Bank Park. Most of the time, though, he and son would follow the Phillies on radio and television broadcasts. Happy to enjoy two Phillies World Series wins, his favorite Phillies story was about being on the beach and listening on the radio to Jim Bunning throw a perfect game against on Father's Day 1964.
No one that spent time with Gene would be surprised that his wife and daughter nicknamed him "The Professor", alluding to him being well suited to being a history professor if he hadn't entered the computer industry. Gene always loved reading and watching about historical events and was often found studying his favorite subjects: World War II, The British Empire, Ancient Egypt, and the American Revolution.
Gene spent 40 years volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America. He joined as a youth and renewed his association with Boy Scouts as a Cub Scout Den Leader when his son joined. After that, Gene never left the Scouting Movement and remained an active leader, instructing multiple generations in the Scout Oath and Law. In recognition to his service and commitment to the Boy Scouts of Philadelphia Council (later Cradle of Liberty Council), Gene was honored with the Silver Beaver award. Gene was honored to be in attendance when each grandson bridged from Cub Scout to Boy Scout. Gene was immensely proud that his son become a Scout Leader and that his grandsons became fourth generation Boy Scouts.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gene's name to the Boys Scouts of America, Cradle of Liberty Council, at https://colbsa.org/donate/ .
