Garrabrant Ryerson Alyea, IV (Brant), age 83, passed away at home on February 4, 2024. He was born December 8,1940 in New Jersey, and grew up in Rutherford playing all the sports you can think of. He was a star athlete at Rutherford High School, and attended Hofstra University on a basketball scholarship, then was drafted into Major League Baseball and played for the Washington Senators, Minnesota Twins, and Oakland Athletics. Brant was the first of a select few who hit a home run on the very first MLB pitch he faced, while pinch-hitting. The pinnacle of Brant's career was winning the World Series in 1972 with the Oakland A's.
Brant was the loving husband of the late Robin Huber. Beloved father of Steve Souder, Brant Alyea, Jr., Blair Alyea, Nicole Higgins (Jim Direso) and Ken Huber (Sabrina). Adored grandfather of Elizabeth, Kaylee, Kenny, and Connor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Garrabrant and Robertina Alyea (nee Douglas) and brothers Robert and Peter Alyea. He is survived by his sister Suzanne Fabiano, brother David Alyea (Christine), sister Kathryn Alyea, his cousin Linda Lovstad, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
