"Jack" Layton
January 1, 1937 – September 27, 2025
John E. Layton "Jack", a lifelong resident of Fishtown, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025. He was the beloved husband of the late Carole Layton (née Charlton), with whom he shared 66 wonderful years of marriage.
Jack was the devoted father of Carole Turchi (John), Linda Kearney (Terry), Lisa Layton, Kelly Sanabria (Aquilino), and Jacqulyn Thoroughgood (Patrick). He was a cherished "Pop Pop" to Vanessa Perrault (Chris), Alana Turchi (Ruben), Damien Turchi, Matthew Kearney (Tiffany), Mark Kearney (Kelly), Joshua Sanabria (Alexis), Morgan Sanabria, Noelle Thoroughgood, and Courtney Thoroughgood (Cheyenne). He took great pride in being a great-grandfather to Ana Lucia, Parker, Nico, and Olive.
Jack was the dear brother of Francis C. Layton (Jean) and the late Kay Yost, and is also survived by his brother-in-law, Arthur "Joe" Yost. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
A graduate of West Catholic High School, Class of 1955, John worked as a dedicated Teamster with Local 107. He was employed at Pepsi Co. and later became a driver and salesman at Drake's Bakery until his retirement.
Jack had a passion for music. A talented drummer, alto saxophonist, and singer, he performed with the bands Four Sharps and a Flat and The Chevelles, entertaining at local clubs and restaurants throughout the 1960s and 70s.
Relatives, friends, and fellow members of Teamsters Local 107 are invited to his viewing on Friday, October 3, 2025, at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 701 Gaul St. (at Berks), Philadelphia, PA 19125 from 10:00 AM - 11:15 AM. Funeral Mass will follow at 11:30 AM. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jack may be made to Holy Name of Jesus Church at the address above.
