John Shade Kernan of Philadelphia passed away peacefully on March 11, 2021at Southeastern Veterans Center, Spring City,
PA, he was 98. Born to Nora and Edward Kernan on March 26,1922, Jack was just 15 days away from his 99th birthday.
Raised in Clearfield, PA, Jack spent his adult life in Northeast Philadelphia where he worked and raised 5 children with wife Margaret. Prior to that, Jack enlisted in the Marine Corps and saw action throughout the South Pacific, especially the Marshall and Gilbert Islands. He was part of Marine Attack Squadron 331 and a rear gunner in a Dauntless Dive Bomber before returning home to work, marry and complete his college education at LaSalle College. As Director of Purchasing for Janney Cylinder, Phila. for 47 years followed by 10 years at Thalheimer Bros, Phila. Jack enjoyed being busy. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, gardener, reader, cook and spent many hours supporting his beloved grandchildren's activities,
usually with Philadelphia pretzels in hand. Jack was a life long member of Saint Katherine of Siena Parish, Philadelphia.
Jack is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Kernan (Custer), daughter Margaret Dougherty(Kernan), grandson Michael Dougherty and brothers, James, William and Edward Kernan.
Jack is survived by his dear sister, "Pal"- Rita Marie Rossney in Rochester, N.Y. and children John C. Kernan (Nancy), Michael Kernan(Nancie), Jane Kernan and Mark Kernan, also son in law Joseph Dougherty. He was a devoted grandfather to 11 cherished grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews of whom he was very proud. Having lived his life in Philadelphia, Jack moved to South Eastern Veterans Center in 2019. Thank you to Melissa, Ryan and staff for your care. Ever so proud to have served his country as a Marine, Jack will be honored with burial at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Washington Crossing, PA in the near future. There will be no in person services due to the many and varied COVID safety protocols and restrictions, and considering Washington Crossing Veterans Cemetery is a Federal facility.
