Obituary

John McGurney, 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 11 in Doylestown Hospital.

Born on August 11, 1932 to John, Sr. and Amelia McGurney of Philadelphia, John was a graduate of Roman Catholic High School, a member of the United States Air Force, and a Korean War veteran.

In 1957, John married his sweetheart, Mary McGurney (nee Arakelian), and they remained together until his passing. After a lengthy residency in Newtown, PA., John and Mary, moved to Camden-Wyoming, DE.  After several years in Delaware, the couple moved back to the Bucks County area to be in closer proximity to family.

John is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary, and the children he loved; John (Stephanie) of Maple Shade, NJ., Kathleen of Furlong, PA., Joanne Butler (Craig) of Gladwyne, PA., Mark of North Wales, PA, and Brian (Laura) of Newtown, PA.  John is also survived by eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. It is those grandchildren that hold fond memories of his creations, "The Yoddock" and " Mr. Kitzel".  Preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Thomas Higgins.  Also survived  by his brother and sister in law, William and Valerie, and many nieces and nephews.

He was a Newtown Township Supervisor, and was instrumental in the design and planning of the current township municipal building.  In 1965, while living in Philadelphia, he established Our Lady of Calvary football program which is still in existence today.

John was forever involved in home renovation projects.  Be it patio additions, extra rooms within their various homes, plumbing, roofing, flooring, electrical work, concrete or hardscapes, John did it all…and he did it well.  His projects were flawless, and attention was given to every aspect of the job.  He truly loved building.  When not engaged in his home projects, he could be found at any local Home Depot or Lowes stores.  Sometimes he would visit these stores not because he needed something, but instead because while he was there, he was simply in his element.

If John let you into his inner circle, you had a friend forever.  He was loyal, caring, and proud.  He led a long, fruitful life, and he will be missed by many.

Relatives and friends are invited to pay respects 11 – 11:45 A.M. Thursday, December 15, 2022, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 5194 Cold Spring Creamery Road, Doylestown, PA 18902., followed by his Memorial Mass at 12 Noon.
