Obituary

Joseph J. Barros, 90, of Philadelphia, entered into his eternal rest on January 19, 2018 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband of Antoinette Barros (nee Pila) and they celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary last May 31st. Born in Freeland, PA, Joe was the son of Manuel A. and Gloria Barros (nee Martin. Joe retired from Bok Technical High School after 31 years of teaching Business Education classes.

Joe attended Stephen S. Palmer High School in Palmerton, PA and after two tours of service, graduated from Bloomsburg University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration education in May 1958. Joe was employed by Bok Technical School in Fall of 1958 as a Business Education teacher. While working at Bok High School, Joe received his Masters degree from Temple University. Joe retired from Bok Technical School after over 30 years of service.

Joe was drafted into the service near the end of World War II and was honorably discharged in 1950. A year later, in 1951, Joe enlisted in the US Army and served two years in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1952, receiving several medals and citations.

Joe, along with his loving wife, began their time together on Mary 31, 1958 and settled down in Philadelphia. Both Joe and Antoinette came from small towns only to adjust to the life of city dwellers. They made the transition quickly and soon became important and integral members of their church parish, St. Katherine of Siena, and their neighborhood, East Torresdale.

He is survived by his wife Antoinette "Toni"; one sister Gloria DeSousa of Lehighton, PA; six nieces, Olivia Vargo of Bethlehem, Linda Yenser Kistler of Slatington, Denise Gerber of Lehighton, Cathi Fies of Lehighton, Lisa Petrocelli of Allentown, and Toni Hamlin (nee Barros) of New York; four nephews, Manuel Esteves of Bethlehem, Lani Barros of New York, James Barros of New York, Lee Barros of New York; and several grand nieces and nephews.

Joe is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Canzoneri and Phyllis Pila along with their children Anthony, Tommy, Joey, Jim and Bobby; as well as his loving and caring second family, Steve and Cathy Weiss, along with their children Nicole and Andrew (God Son of Joe and Antoinette).

Joe is predeceased by his brother Tony Barros, and his sisters Matilda Esteves and Olivia Yenser. Also predeceased by his nieces Doris Barros, Michelle Yenser, and his nephews Junior Esteves, John Barros and Danny Yenser.

Relatives and friends are invited to his gathering Tuesday 10 to 10:45 A.M., St. Katherine of Siena Church, 9700 Frankford Ave., Phila., PA, followed by his Funeral Mass 11 A.M. Interment will be held at Resurrection Cem. In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. Katherine of Siena School, 9738 Frankford Ave., Phila., PA 19114 in his memory would be appreciated.
