Joseph G. Kain

Joseph G. “Pop” Kain, 94, passed away peacefully at home on August 12, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly.

Born and raised in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood, Pop was a proud Philadelphian, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and a truly remarkable man. To those who knew him, he was simply Pop—and there will never be another quite like him.

He was the beloved husband of 57 years to Joanne (McCarthy) and devoted father of Joseph, Jr., Michael (Carol), and the late Timothy (Bonnie). He was the cherished grandfather of Molly, Catie, Aidan, Michael, Keira, and Kelsey. He was preceded in death by his siblings Catherine “Cass” McPeak (James), Marie “Sis” Nicolo (Peter), and James (Tease). He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and family members who will miss him dearly.

Pop was a proud graduate of Holy Name of Jesus school (Class of ’45) and North Catholic High School (Class of ’49) and then proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He spent much of his working life serving the Philadelphia community, working for Philadelphia Gas Works and SEPTA before retiring. Retirement, however, did not mean sitting still. He went on to work part-time for another ten years for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

But Pop’s greatest accomplishments were never found on a résumé.

He was a man who believed in showing up — for his family, his friends, his community, and for anyone who needed him. He coached his sons in baseball, served as a treasurer for the Boy Scout Troop 321 and Gibbons PAL, and faithfully never missed a First Friday Mass. He was involved in numerous organizations and causes throughout his life, always finding another way to serve and give back.

And then there was his family.

Pop was the greatest man his family had ever known. He was the number one supporter of all of his grandchildren, taking genuine interest in their lives, their friends, their accomplishments, and the people they cared about. He knew their friends and their friends’ parents — not simply because he had met them, but because he genuinely wanted to know them.

He had a way of making people feel important.

Pop was famous for showing up unexpectedly, often with donuts in hand, simply because he was thinking about someone. He never needed a reason to stop by, check in, lend a hand, or let someone know he was there. His presence was a gift.

He loved baseball, Notre Dame football, the Mummers, his faith, his family, and, in later years, all things crew. He cheered loudly and proudly for his grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to celebrate the people he loved.

Pop’s life was defined not by one extraordinary moment, but by thousands of ordinary acts of kindness, loyalty, generosity, faith, and love. He was the person you could count on. He was the person who showed up. He was the person who remembered.

He leaves behind a family who was extraordinarily blessed to call him husband, father, grandfather, brother, and Pop. His absence will be deeply felt, but so will the immeasurable love, wisdom, laughter, and memories he gave us.

Pop was truly one of a kind. He was loved beyond measure, and he will be missed beyond words.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Sunday, August 16, 2026, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM Burns Funeral Home, 9708 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia. A second viewing will be held Monday, August 17, 2026, 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM, followed by his Funeral Mass 10:00 AM St. Katherine of Siena Church, 9700 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia.  Interment will be held at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe's memory to the Northeast Catholic Alumni Memorial Fund (www.northcatholicalumni.org) would be appreciated.
