Joseph McCusker passed away on February 9, 2026, at the age of 72. Beloved husband of Deborah (nee Budny). Loving dad to Brian (Alyse), Tim (Jenn), and Katie Vandevender (George); devoted stepdad to Jamie Owens (Christina) and Laura Birch (Michael). Cherished Pop-Pop to Gia, Cassidy, Cru, Owen, Hailey, Lily, Liam, Cecilia, Jason, Parker, Ethan, and Hanna. Dear brother of Edward (the late Barbara), Robert (Donna), Ann Gospodarek (David), and the late James, Margaret “Peggy” Fulton, Jack, and Richard. Joe is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joe was truly one of a kind — a busy guy in the best way. He was a soccer coach, sideline coach, playground guy, AOH guy… everyone knew Joe, and everyone loved Joe.
Raised in the Parkwood section of Philadelphia, Joe was part of the legendary “playground crowd,” a close-knit group of friends who grew up together and continued to meet monthly throughout the years. He cherished those regular lunches with his dear friends and the lifelong bond they shared.
Joe was a proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 39, in the Tacony section of Philadelphia.
He had a long and dedicated career with Atlantic Aviation at Philadelphia International Airport. His love of soccer led him to coach at Summerdale and FC Bayern, and later to open Lighthouse, where he continued sideline coaching and mentoring young athletes.
Above all, Joe loved being with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren, who brought him endless pride and joy. He so enjoyed the many trips to Michigan and the special memories made along the way.
Relatives and friends are invited to Joe’s viewing on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Our Lady of Calvary Church (11024 Knights Rd., Philadelphia, PA 19154), from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, followed by his Funeral Mass. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe’s name to the Hibernian Hunger Project, AOH 39 mailing address 7229 Tulip St., Philadelphia PA 19135.
