Obituary

Mary Ellen McGahan (nee Mood) passed away on April 25, 2020 at the age of 81. Beloved wife of the
late Joseph. She is survived by her daughters Mary Ellen DeHart (Albert), Kathaleen Eker (Jeffrey) and
JoAnne McGahan, her grandchildren Amanda Williams (Michael), Jeffrey Eker and Christina Eker and her
great-grandson, Cole Terrill. Mary Ellen is also survived by her sisters, Elizabeth, Julia and Burma and her
sister-in-law, Agnes, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in this life by her father and
mother, John and Mary Mood and her brothers John, James and George Mood.
A life-long resident of Fishtown and St. Anne's Parish, Mary Ellen worked for the Small Claims Court of
Philadelphia from which she retired in 1999. She looked forward every year to going to the beach in
Lewes, Delaware with her family, sitting on the beach and boardwalk "people-watching". Her greatest joy
in life were her grandchildren and her great grandson who affectionately called her "Great-Gia". She
loved them dearly and would tell anyone that would listen about each and every one of their
accomplishments, big or small.
To her daughters she was both mother and father for most of their life. She was their comforter and
disciplinarian when they were young and their confidant and sounding board as adults. She instilled in us
a strong sense of family and as well as teaching us that we should always find the upside of every
situation.
Due to current conditions and circumstances, her burial will be private at Hillside Cemetery.
A Mass and
a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Contributions in her memory can be made to The
Church and Shrine of St. Anne, 2328 E. Lehigh Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19125.
