MATTHEW 'MATT' ALOYSIUS KELLY, III, age 52, passed away on August 16, 2024 in Philadelphia, PA. Beloved husband of Tierney (nee McNulty). Loving father of Matthew, IV. Brother of Maureen Donofrio (Jerry), John Kelly (Amy), Joseph Kelly (Sue), Stephen Kelly (Kenann), Suzanne Kelly, Michael Kelly, and Marcia "Pooh" Barish (Lonnie). Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and beloved friends. Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing Saturday morning, August 24, 2024, from 10-11:45 A.M. at St. Dominic Church, 8504 Frankford Ave., Phila., PA 19136. Funeral Mass 12 Noon. Matt was born in Philadelphia to Matthew A. Kelly, Jr. and Barbara Claire Kelly and was the sixth of eight children.
Matt grew up in Bucks County, PA where he attended St. Bede the Venerable grade school followed by Archbishop Wood High School where Matt excelled in academics and sports but would be most remembered by classmates for his brilliant wit and keen sense of humor. Matt enjoyed countless summers in Ocean City, New Jersey where he was an award-winning paperboy for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
He received an undergraduate degree from The University of Notre Dame where he studied Biology and English Literature and was a proud member of the The Notre Dame boxing team "Bengal Bouts" as well as the Sailing Club.
Matt received his Juris Doctor from Villanova School of Law and attended The University of Pennsylvania for post graduate studies in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Matt specialized in Copyright Infringement and Intellectual Property, which included appellate practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. Matt loved his clients and the Law.
Matt loved his friends. Whether it was the annual Notre Dame Bus Trip or his annual camping trip, he showed up for his friends and truly loved spending time with them.
Matt loved to travel and took his family on epic trips with researched and executed details that only a luxury travel agent could achieve. He loved movies, reading, and going to concerts with Tierney.
Matt loved artisanal foods and beverages and the restaurant scene in Philadelphia where he knew the perfect dish and place to go for any occasion.
Matt met Tierney during those grueling first few years, after law school, working in the real world. After long days of billable hours as a young attorney, Matt made sure to support Tierney's career by showing up at her many events, in a suit. This was an early hallmark of their relationship that continued well into their twenty-two years of marriage.
Matt loved being a father and took the job very seriously making sure Matthew traveled the world, ate the jamon, and lived life to the fullest. He loved watching Matthew play rugby at LaSalle College High School and then at St. Joseph's University.
He will be missed for his humor, wit, generosity and the "Matt Kelly" of it all.
