Michael Perlstein of Warminster Twp., died May 26, 2017 in Hatfield, PA. He was 90.
He was the husband of the late Ann Perlstein (2016). Born in Hungary, he was the son of the late Abraham and Irene Perlstein and brother to the late Theodore "Ted" Perlstein.
He emigrated to America in 1935 at the age of 9 and lived in the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia until his marriage. He moved, with his family, to the Warminster area in 1956.
Michael retired in 1978 from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development as the program manager of the Camden area office. He was hired by the county of Bucks, the same year, as the Project Administer of the County Community Block Grant Development Program. He retired from the county in February of 1993.
He was a Navy Veteran of World War II, serving on a Destroyer Escort (DE-173) in both the African and Pacific Theater of Operations. He was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 6493 in Warminster, PA.
He was a graduate of Temple University Business School and earned his Master's Degree from Fels Institute of State and Local Government, University of Pennsylvania. He was commissioned a 2 nd Lt. through the ROTC program at Temple University and attended the US Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas as a Captain. He retired from the US Army reserve as a Major.
Michael was president of the Longstreth Home and School Assoc. and served the executive boards of the Warminster baseball and football associations. He coached and managed little league teams in baseball, football, basketball and soccer. He was a member of the advisory board of the Benjamin Wilson Senior Center.
In 1947, after his honorable discharge from the US Navy, he was a crew member of the Hatikva Ferrying Jewish Survivors of the Holocust from France and Italy to Israel. He also helped to operate a refugee center, in France, for Hungarian children and transported them overland to ports where ships were leaving for Israel. He recently attended a reunion in Israel with shipmates and other American and Canadian sailors who participated in the "Alliya Beth" movement prior to Israel's Independence in 1948.
He is survived by four sons, Gary (Jeannie), David (Brigitte), Steven (Wendy), Ronald, and 12 grandchildren, Christina, Danielle, Melanie, Michael, Casey, Nicholas, Jesse, Garret, Quinn, Tate, Marianna, Romeo and his great grandson Matthew. He is also survived by his sister Clara Levin (Norman), of Philadelphia.
Relatives and friends are invited to his graveside service on Friday, June 2, 2017 at Pinegrove Memorial Cemetery, 1475 West County Line Rd. Warminster, PA 18974. Please arrive at the cemetery by 11:45 AM; Michael's service will start precisely at 12:00 PM.
