Obituary

Norman L. Smeal passed away April 18, 2023 at the age of 63. Beloved husband of the late Loretta. Loving father of Jean Smeal. Adoring grandpop of Nolan and Julian. Dear brother of Jeff, and the late Susan and John. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Norman was a 1979 graduate of the PA School for the Deaf.  For 38 years he worked as a sheet metal mechanic at Boeing until he retired. He also worked at Sorenson as a field installer and trainer. Norman was the president of the International Catholic Deaf Association, Chapter # 8 for many years and served the ICDA in many different roles.  In 2000, Norman graduated from the Church Ministry Institute at St. Charles Seminary.   Over the years he served in various capacities assisting the Deaf Apostolate as religion teacher, lector, sacristan for the Deaf community Masses and volunteer at Camp Overbrook: In Sign for Deaf children.    He with his wife Loretta, worked untiringly to make the ICDA annual Christmas party for children a huge success.   Norman also quietly helped many people in the Deaf community giving them support, visiting those who were sick, bringing them the Holy Eucharist or providing rides to doctors. Norman was a person whom you could always depend on to lend a hand or help until the task was done.   In 2019, Archbishop Chaput awarded Norman, the papal honor, called the Benemerenti Medal for his service to the church.

Norman enjoyed traveling with his wife, being with his daughter and grandsons, bowling, watching the Phillies and being an avid Cowboys fan in Eagles territory.
