Obituary

On March 12, 2021, age 88, Patricia Gavin passed away peacefully surrounded by family. She was predeceased by her parents Amadeo Pescatore and Anna Nelson.  Wife of the late James F. "Jumbo" Gavin, also predeceased by her loving sons James and Richard and two infant sons.  Devoted mother of Thomas (Lori), John, Patrick (Joanne), Michael (Maureen), Margaret Rosenello (Michael), Robert (Brian), Patricia Kostuchik (Stefan) and Mary Gavin (Shana). She is also survived by 16 beloved grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  She is the dear sister of Carmella Vito and the late Eugene Pescatore, Kathryn Kelleher, Valentine Pescatore, Anna Lawless, and Amadeo "Thomas" Pescatore.

Patricia was known by many names to her family and friends – Mom, Grandmom, Mrs. Gavin, Pat, Patsy, Pat Pat, Florida Grandmom, Beach Grandmom, Wittle Grandmom, Old Lady and Gooch.  She grew up in South Philly and attended John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School where she was a swimmer.  Patsy and her husband relocated to Swarthmorewood, Delaware County to accommodate their growing family.  In 1966, Patsy's husband died leaving her to raise 10 children between the ages of 16 and 6 weeks old on her own.  Soon thereafter, Patsy and her children relocated to "5 th Street" in North Wildwood, NJ.  Over the years, 5 th Street became everyone's favorite place and Patsy's grandchildren loved to spend their summers at the shore.

Patsy loved family road trips to Notre Dame to watch her daughter Mary play basketball and all were invited to the "trophy room" on 5 th Street where she proudly displayed the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.  In the summers you could find Patsy on 5 th street at her kitchen table with a cup of coffee entertaining friends and family.  During the winter months, Patsy traveled to visit her children or grandchildren and made sure to share her time evenly to avoid spats over who saw Grandmom more.

Patsy dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren.  Her family was her true JOY and always came first.  Patsy never turned anyone away — she always made sure you felt welcome and were well fed.   Patsy embodied both strength and kindness — she accepted everyone for who they were, never judged and was generous with her forgiveness.  Patsy was a safe haven for many.  If she wasn't surrounded by her children, grandchildren or some other visitor, you could find her on the telephone checking to see how you were doing or writing out birthday cards with her signature XOXO.  There was never a question about whether you were loved!  Up until her last breath, she was making sure that we all take care of one another.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral mass on Thursday, March 18 at Saint Katherine of Siena Church, 9700 Frankford Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19114.  Friends may call from 9 to 11 AM at the church prior to Mass.  Burial will be private at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude Research Hospital , 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105, or perform an act of kindness in Patsy's memory.
