Patricia "Pat" McGarvey (nee Donaghy) died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, February 23, 2023. She was eighty-three years old and a resident of Sea Isle City, New Jersey. She was a former resident of the Lawndale Section of Philadelphia. She was born on Wednesday, January 24, 1940 in the Fairhill Section of the city. She was the cherished daughter of Patrick Donaghy and granddaughter of Frank and Annie Donaghy from Dungiven, County Derry, Ireland.
Pat attended Saint Boniface Business School (Class of '56) and earned a Sociology Degree from La Salle University graduating, with honors, in 1983. Pat worked for Dr. Fred Stutman for over forty-years. She both managed the medical office and worked as the editor and marketing director for his publishing house Medical Manner Books.
Pat is survived by her loving husband of over sixty-three years John "Jack" McGarvey. She was devoted mother to Patricia Kane (Gene), Sean (Shari) and Colleen Mackuse (Gregg) and her honorary son Daniel (Denise) McQuaid. Proud grandmom to Kerri Hamm (Jake), Kelsey, Kevin, Jenna, Jack, Jillian, Jamee, Jaedyn and Jordyn. Proud great-grandmother to Lucas, Leah, Liam and Finnegan. She was a dear mother-in-law to Christina McGarvey and dedicated cousin to Joanne Donaghy. In addition to her father and grandparents, she was preceded in death by her life-long friend Jean Planinshek and her sister Ronnie (Kip) Collier.
Pat was a kind but determined soul whose love and devotion to Jack and their family knew no bounds. She had a life-long devotion to the newspaper, in print, and would read any and as many newspapers as she could get her hands on each day. In addition, she had a deep love of American politics and when she was not out enjoying good times with family or a favorite pastime of shopping for picture frames, you could find her surrounded by her newspapers watching "her shows," those discussing politics in relation to advancing a more compassionate and cohesive American Society.
At the end of the day, when the newspapers were read and the television turned to off, she engaged in her other passion, prayer. Following the lead of her Irish Catholic Grandmother, she was devoted to her novenas and favorite Saints and spent hours each day praying for the needs of family and friends. While Pat will be deeply missed and remembered with passion by Jack and their children, and grandchildren, they all will find comfort in having had the privilege and immense great fortune to have had the opportunity to call such a kind, generous, courageous, determined and free-thinking woman, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Tuesday 8:30 AM at BURNS FUNERAL HOME, 9708 Frankford Ave. Phila., PA 19114 followed by her Funeral Mass 10:30 AM at St. Katherine of Siena Church. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.
