Obituary

Philip Edward Dumas, Ph.D., age 68, of Morrisville, PA and Davis, WV, died on August 19, 2009, at his home in Morrisville. Dr. Dumas was born on September 26, 1940 in New York, New York to Edward and Asta Dumas. He spent his early childhood in Pittsburgh before moving with his family to New York City. He graduated from City College of New York in 1965 and completed his graduate studies in chemistry at the University of South Carolina in 1971.

From 1972 until his retirement earlier this year, he worked as a
professor in the Chemistry Department of The College of New Jersey, having served as department chair for most of that time. He acted as a mentor to many freshman, faculty and students. He was instrumental in obtaining American Chemical Society accreditation for the department and was head of the Chemistry Honors program. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, ham radio, and spending time at his home in West Virginia.

Dr. Dumas is survived by his wife, Jeanne, his brother David
(Charleston, SC), daughter Noelle (Dahlonega, GA), sons David
(Chicago, IL) and Bradley (Morrisville, PA), and two grandchildren. He will be missed by his large extended family, friends, colleagues,and students.

In accordance with his wishes and family traditions, there will not be a formal funeral service. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be given in his name to the American Cancer Society.
