Obituary

Former students and friends are invited to a celebration of Ron's life on Saturday, September 23, 2023, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Greater Plymouth Community Center, Plymouth Rooms A & B, 2910 Jolly Road, Plymouth Meeting, PA

Ronald Andrew Holly of Plymouth Meeting, PA, died on Friday, August 25, 2023, at Reading Hospital. He was 88. Ron, the only child of Andrew and Evelyn Holly, was born on February 25, 1935, in Philadelphia, PA. He attended LaSalle HS, West Chester State Teachers' College, and Temple University. In 1956, Ron married the love of his life, Sylva Jean Barr. They were married for 56 years, until her death in 2012. He is survived by son David (Frances) and daughter Kathleen (Richard), seven grandchildren (Jessica, Christopher, Samantha, Zachary, Stephen, Shane, and Kaitlyn) and seven great grandchildren (Liam, Rowan, Keira, Ryker, Jaxson, Olivia, and Dawson).

"Mr. Holly" was band director at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School from 1967-1981, where he led the Marching Colonials to numerous Cavalcade and National championships during the 1970s. He was also the Music Coordinator for the Colonial School District. Previously, Ron taught in NJ at Deptford High School. Ron never realized his dream of playing trombone professionally, but he instead made a significant impact on hundreds of students' lives over 25 years.

After retiring from teaching, Ron and Sylva worked together in scholastic fundraising and home appraisals. He was a serious "gentleman farmer" who spent warm weather months tending to his plentiful vegetable garden, even raising calves at one point. He was also a die-hard Eagles and Phillies fan.

Former students and friends will be invited to a celebration of Ron's life on a date to be announced. A graveside service, near Sylva's hometown of Bellefonte, PA, will be private. To leave a condolence or message to the family, please visit Burns Funeral Home condolence page. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ron's name to the Colonial School District Education Foundation's Scholarship Fund or to the PW Band Boosters . [Cue PW drum cadence]
