Obituary

Rosaleen T. Friend (nee Mc Ardle), of Philadelphia, age 85, passed away peacefully January 4, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones.  Loving mother of Raymond Friend (Susan), Rosemarie Friend-Donnelly, Theresa Montgomery (Robert), Kathleen Friend-MacAdams (Joseph), and Michael Friend (Maureen).  Beloved Nana to 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Cherished sister of Michael McArdle and adored "Aunt Rosie" to many nephews and nieces. Preceded in death by her parents Michael and MaryAnn McArdle, sister Maureen Reilly, and brother James McArdle.

Rosaleen was born in Jonesborough, County Armagh, Ireland, and immigrated to the United States on the RMS Brittanic in November 1951.  Her immediate and extended family meant the world to her and were instrumental in helping her to successfully transition to her new life in America.

Rosaleen was a 1958 graduate of St. Huberts High School. Rose loved telling stories about her life as a teenager. She had many adventures with cousins and friends at the Jersey shore and the Boulevard Pools. She then married, and became a mom and realized motherhood was a role she would most succeed and love.

Rosaleen found a career outside the home at Pathmark where she took on many roles including a favorite cashier.  Regular customers would wait in longer lines just to go through Rosie's line for a smile and to say hello.  Her warmth and compassion spilled from her and drew people to her. Her gentle spirit, warm heart, and selfless nature left a lasting impression on all who knew her. Rosaleen retired from Pathmark after 31 years.

Outside of work, Rosaleen had a lifelong passion for gardening and flower arrangements. Roses and Peonies were among her favorite flowers. Her gardens thrived thanks to her expert skill, green thumb, and knowledge of plants.  She loved to cook and share her recipes with family and friends.  It was with great delight when Rosaleen hosted many cousins from Ireland over the years. Spending time with them, she enjoyed hearing the stories from back home as well as sharing new places with them in America. She loved a good bargain and was always searching for a deal. Rose was a very independent, strong woman.  She learned from her father and brother, the many things you can do with a hammer and nail gun.
Most importantly, she treasured time spent with her children and grandchildren. Her love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

Relatives and friends are invited to her Viewing Saturday morning, 9:00-11:00 A.M. at BURNS FUNERAL HOME, 9708 Frankford Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19114.  Funeral Service 11:15 A.M.  Interment Resurrection Cemetery
