Ruth passed into eternal rest on January 11, 2013 at St. Mary Medical Center, Langhorne, PA where she was also the first patient treated in 1973. Born on June 12, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA, she was preceded in death by her father, Stanley Wilson; her mother, Sarah Wilson; her brother, Stanley Wilson, Jr.; and her husband of almost 40 years, Harold Smarkola, Sr.. A resident of Levittown's Birch Valley section for over 50 years, she moved to Wood River Village Lifecare Facility, Bensalem, PA in 2003. She constantly referred to the staff and the residents at Wood River as the best care givers and friends she could ever have. A longtime member of Emilie Methodist Church, she was also active in the Delaware Valley Chorale Society for many, many years bringing happiness to seniors wherever they sang. She was also an active member of Hope For the Animals/The Crossing Animal Sanctuary, a no-kill animal shelter for almost 20 years. Ruth truly loved her caregivers, especially her primary internist, Dr. Jeffrey Blumenthal. She is survived by her son, Harold Smarkola, Jr., and his wife Peggy; her daughter, Paula Spor, and her husband Otto; grandchildren Bekci Kelly and her husband Kevin, and Stephen Spor and his wife Becky. Ruth loved spending time with her great grandchildren Stephen and Hunter Spor, and Kyra and Maggie Kelly. Relatives and friends are invited to call Friday 9:30-10:45 AM at BURNS FUNERAL HOME, 1514 Woodbourne Rd., Levittown, PA 19057 followed by her Service 11 AM. Interment Montrose Cemetery (Upper Darby, PA). A memorial ceremony will be held at a later date to be announced, at Wood River Village Community, Bensalem, PA.
