Our history

Burns Funeral Home, Inc. was founded in 1939 by Martin J. Burns, Sr., who initially worked as an ice and coal delivery man before entering the funeral service industry. Martin’s wife, Grace McNeill, also earned her funeral director’s license to assist her husband in their shared mission. Before opening his own funeral home, Martin worked part-time at a local funeral home, building the foundation for his future business. Once established, his deep roots in the community made him a trusted figure—many families knew him from his daily visits to their homes, which helped him earn their confidence and trust.

The first location of Burns Funeral Home was at 1428 E. Columbia Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19125. In 1957, Martin and Grace moved their family to the Torresdale section of Philadelphia, where they converted their home into a second funeral home. In the late 1980s, they expanded once more, opening a third location in Levittown to better serve the growing needs of the community.
